I lost on Jeopardy

Some of my earliest TV memories were of watching Jeopardy with my mother. The current incarnation of show is 24 this year, and I’m 34, and I actually remember the media blitz when they launched the new, Alex Trebek-hosted version. This is because at the age of 10 I was susceptible to advertising-driven excitement over corporate products, but also because I was, and remain to this day, a nerd. I love trivia. I don’t necessarily mean that I seek out trivia-themed competition — though I’m always up for Trivial Pursuit, I was never in Quiz Bowl or did bar trivia night. No, I mean that I enjoy learning trivial information for its own sake. I read Wikipedia for fun. I tell “interesting anecdotes” about long-dead kings that have caused the occasional eye to glaze over.
Pretty much from the beginning, people told me “You should be on Jeopardy!” I believe I actually sent in a 3 x 5 card one year in an attempt to get into the teen tournament; I never heard back. As I grew into adulthood, I stopped watching the show on any sort of regular basis, but it was always in the back of my mind — if I were ever going to do any kind of game show, that would be the one. And this year, it actually happened. There seems to be some kind of rule that if you go on Jeopardy, you write about it on the Internet — I found plenty of narratives as I was preparing to be on the show — so here’s my contribution.
Incredible Fish Armor Could Suit Soldiers
Incredible Fish Armor Could Suit Soldiers

African fish that have trolled for prey in murky freshwater pools for nearly 100 million years sport the best of the best in body armor. Now a team of engineers has dissected the aquatic armor, figuring out how it works in an effort to suit up future soldiers.
The armor of the fish, Polypterus senegalus, is so effective because it is a composite of several materials lined up in a certain way, the engineers state in a their analysis detailed in the July 27 issue of the journal Nature Materials.
“Such fundamental knowledge holds great potential for the development of improved biologically inspired structural materials,” said lead MIT researcher Christine Ortiz, “for example soldier, first-responder and military vehicle armor applications.”

Nice simple shoot ‘em up with tons of power ups. Lacks exciting powerups.
Endgame: Scrabulous Gets Wiped Off Facebook
Endgame: Scrabulous Gets Wiped Off Facebook

Long outplayed by two Indian brothers, Hasbro finally delivers a massive counter blow to Scrabulous, one of the most loved games on Facebook. Scrabulous fans in North America will see the following message when they try to play the game:
Scrabulous is disabled for U.S. and Canadian users until further notice. If you would like to stay informed about developments in this matter, please click here.
Hsbro has long contended that Scrabulous infringes on its trademarks for Scrabble. It licenses the North American digital rights for Scrabble to Electronic Arts, which announced its own Facebook version of the game earlier this month. (RealNetworks owns the international digital rights, and is not taking as aggressive a stance against Scrabulous).

It sort of reminded me of “Star Fox” and “Knife Edge,” both great titles. The gameplay was excellent, and the classic shoot-em-up alien style never ever gets old.

Bush administration projects record 2009 deficit

The next president will inherit a record budget deficit of $482 billion, according to a new Bush administration estimate.
A Bush administration official said the deficit was being driven to an all-time high by the sagging economy and the stimulus payments being made to 130 million households in an effort to keep the country from falling into a deep recession. A $482 billion deficit approaching billion would easily surpass the record deficit of $413 billion set in 2004.
Government officials confirmed the $482 billion figure Monday on condition of anonymity because the new estimate had not been formally released. Administration officials were scheduled to do that at a news conference later in the day.

Think you don’t have anything to worry about in the switch from analog to digital television? Think again.
Consumers have been told that the upcoming transition TV changeover would mainly impact viewers with old TVs using ancient rabbit ears for reception. And those stone-aged watchers need only purchase a new set-top converter box, subsidized by coupons from the U.S. government, to continue watching. And everyone would go on their merry sitcom-watching ways.
Turns out, that’s not the whole story.
There actually are two analog-to-digital transitions going on. One, you’ve heard a lot about – the broadcast changeover. But the other – the analog cable to digital cable transition – could leave up to 100 million TVs in the dark, unable to display any cable TV channels at all without adding extra equipment.
Wind turbines are ruining our quality of life
Wind turbines ‘are ruining our quality of life’
The majority of people living near wind turbines believe that the noise they make is ruining their health and quality of life, a report has revealed.
Neighbours also claim that the constant hum and the loud “whooshing” sound made by the blades in high winds is destroying the value of their homes.
A survey of people whose homes are situated within 1.2 miles of turbines has shown that three-quarters of them feel that the noise has damaged their quality of life while four out of five say it has affected their health.

Pretty well done, fairly simple until the end though. Erie vibe. I am a huge fan of point and click games, this one takes it to a whole new level.
